Question from Peterborough, Ontario, Canada:

Can an insulin pump be used to manipulate blood sugar levels? Can it be used to set blood sugar levels either higher or lower than normal? I am asking this because of a new foster teen we have in our home who will report high or low sugar levels at times that seem convenient to her.

Answer:

Insulin pumps indeed can be used to manipulate blood sugars. In addition, children can occasionally factitiously report blood sugars that aren’t true.
