Pregnancy

Question from Decatur, Georgia, USA:

Can pregnancy cause high blood sugars?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Pregnancy can cause high blood sugars. The placenta produces hormones that block the action of insulin. Usually, this effect is mild. However, in some women it is excessive and can lead to diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes). If a woman already has diabetes, then these hormones can result in a need to increase insulin dosing.
