Hypoglycemia, Weight and Weight Loss

Question from Fort Worth, Texas, USA:

Could hypoglycemia cause weight gain or make it difficult to lose weight?

Hypoglycemia can cause weight gain for many people. Those who are having hypoglycemia, even those without diabetes, are having to eat more to bring the blood sugar up which brings on more calories than they eventually burn in energy. This becomes a “catch 22” for the people who already wish to loose weight and causes much frustration.

If you are experiencing this problem, I suggest you discuss ways to avoid hypoglycemia with a diabetes educator/dietitian, be it changes in diabetes medicines or various combinations of foods or both. There’s no guarantee that you can eliminate all hypoglycemia, but any decrease can be beneficial and safer in the long run.
