Question from Greenville, South Carolina, USA:

Do children with type 1 diabetes need to wear socks made of a particular type of fabric?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Children with diabetes need only the same approach to foot safety as other children, such as wearing shoes that are the correct size, avoid going barefoot when they could get injured, etc. There are no special types of socks or footwear required.

What you may have read about special attention to feet would pertain to adults who have problems with the circulation or nerve sensation in their feet. In that case, they should receive instructions from their health care provider about inspecting their feet (or having someone help them), making sure their shoes fit properly, and paying attention to instructions from their health care provider about keeping their skin soft and clipping nails straight across, for example.
