Question from Richmond, Michigan, USA:

Do fevers, ketones, and higher readings such as 400 mean a child has a virus or a cold with no other symptoms present?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

If your child with diabetes has a fever, ketones and high blood sugars, I would follow sick day guidelines. Work with your diabetes care provider about how much extra Regular or Humalog insulin to give with the high blood sugars or high blood sugars with ketones. A high blood sugar with ketones is an urgent situation. Always call for advice if you have not been taught what to do. With high blood sugars give extra fluids (usually sugar-free if your child is eating). Also have the fever checked out by your doctor.
