Question from Pomona, New York, USA:

My girlfriend may be getting mononucleosis. She is complaining of a sore throat and her body is weak. I’ve had mononucleosis for about a week now. Does mononucleosis have a more serious effect on people with diabetes?

Any illness can be more serious when you have diabetes, especially when one has had diabetes for many years. In addition to taking care of the illness, one must be very careful to avoid ketoacidosis during times of illness.
