Question from British Columbia, Canada:

I have a 9 year old daughter diagnosed 8 months ago with type 1 diabetes. We have had much difficulty controlling her sugars. The difference of a half a unit can make her high or low. We have been trying to get her morning fasting sugars to a reasonable level but find that 6.5 units makes her low in the night with rebound and 6 units gives her too high of a morning sugar. This is extremely frustrating and when we check her at 11P.M and 3 A.M. these are not necessarily the times when she is low.

Should we keep her sugars a little higher at 7:30 P.M.? We are presently aiming for between 6-12 mmol/l.

Maybe you should consider giving the insulin later in the evening if you are giving it at 7:30 P.M. Discuss with your daughter’s doctor.
