Question from San Francisco, California, USA:

I would like to know the side effects and complications in Type 1 diabetics who smoke marihuana. My question is directed to help my daughter (15 years old), IDDM since she was 11 years old.

The main problem of taking any drugs in type 1 diabetes is the problem of hypoglycemia unawareness, especially if excessive drugs are taken. However, I don’t know of any evidence that marijuana accelerates any diabetic complications, unlike cigarette smoking which clearly does.
