Question from Warner Robins, Georgia, USA:

Is there a connection between educational delays and type 1 diabetes?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Usually not, but, significant hypoglycemia, as well as significant hyperglycemia and a high A1c, both are related to inattention and doing poorly in school, on exams, on projects etc. Research from Pittsburgh, as well as Zurich, have shown this elegantly so all the more reason to aim for improved glucose control. If there are educational problems, look first to family history to see if others in the family have the same pattern since this is often a genetic issue. Secondly, get the school to run specific tests, or have these done privately, then go get a school conference set up and establish an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) that takes into account diabetes health needs as well as educational needs, resource room, assistance with individual skills, ie. reading, language, math etc. Your primary care provider and your diabetes team can give you some specific advice and should also be consulted, of course.
