Question from Woonsocket, Rhode Island, USA:

Is there a cut off age for developing type 1 diabetes? How common is type 1 in someone over 21 years of age?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

There’s no cut off age for developing type1 diabetes which is why the terminology was changed from “juvenile” and “adult” diabetes to type 1 and type2. However, type 1 is much less common as one gets older. Newer terminology and classification will focus on causes of different types of diabetes since this may have some bearing also on specific treatment options in the future.
