Honeymoon

Question from Hanford, California, USA:

Is there a honeymoon period in people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after the age of 30 and not on insulin? If so, when does it begin and end?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

We often see a honeymoon period after the diagnosis of type1 diabetes, when people will go off insulin entirely for a period of time and then need to add it back again. Type 1 diabetes can happen at any age, most commonly before the age of 40. With type2 diabetes we see changes in medicines, but nothing like the honeymoon period in type 1. The two types of diabetes are very different.

In type 2 diabetes, if diagnosed when blood sugars very high, people can have glucose toxicity which decreases their ability to make insulin and increases insulin resistance. When treated, the blood sugar comes down and the beta cells begin production of insulin again. At this point, less medicine is usually needed for a time. However, type 2 diabetes is a journey and additional medicines will be needed along the way.
