Question from Meredith, New Hampshire, USA:

I have had type 1 diabetes for 46 years. My control is relatively good, with average A1cs of 7.2. For the past few years, I feel relatively apathetic, in general. Is there any correlation between long term type 1 diabetes and general apathy/depression?

Research has found that individuals with diabetes are about two to three times more likely to be depressed than individuals without diabetes, so there is definitely a link between depression and diabetes. I would encourage you to meet with a counselor (psychologist or social worker) to discuss how you are feeling. Your diabetes doctor may be able to give you the name of a counselor that is also knowledgeable about diabetes.

I noticed that you may live close to Massachusetts, so you may want to make an appointment at the Joslin clinic with one of our mental health providers (if you are interested, you can call 617-732-2594). Some individuals who are depressed also benefit from taking an antidepressant. If you meet with a counselor, they should be able to help you decide whether you may benefit from medication as well.
