Question from USA:

Is type 1 diabetes inherited dominantly or recessively?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Diabetes likely is not on one gene, therefore it isn’t transmitted by classical inheritance as you learned in school. It does run in families, type 2 more than type 1, but both are more frequent if you have a family member with diabetes.

We know and can predict that a child has up to a 1 in 15 chance of developing diabetes based on certain genetic markers, certainly not the 50/50 of dominant or the 1 in 4 for recessive. Most believe there will turn out to be more than one gene involved.
