Question from McEwen, Tennessee, USA:

My 10 year old son, who has diabetes, has been having severe upper abdominal pain and vomiting for a week. He vomits yellow bile and this temporarily relieves pain, but It always returns. This happens periodically, and the pediatrician always calls it a stomach virus and says to give him Coca-Cola. He’s been back to the doctor twice this week with no tests or prescriptions. Could this be something more than a stomach virus? Is it time to move on to an endocrinologist?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Yes. Possibilities include (These are the most common ones, but there are many more.):

gastroparesis diabeticorum
celiac disease
ulcers
hiatal hernia
adrenal insufficiency
thyroid problems

A good pediatric endocrinologist who has experience with type1 diabetes will know about these and others to consider, or you can consider going back to your son’s own pediatrician to help you investigate differential diagnoses.
