Question from Minnesota, USA:
My 11-year old daughter has several symptoms of diabetes except that she does not have weight loss, but instead has had significant weight gain in the past couple of years. Should we still think about testing for diabetes?
Answer:
From: DTeam Staff
If she has symptoms of diabetes such as increased thirst and urination, she definitely should be tested for diabetes. It is possible she has Type 2 diabetes which usually occurs in overweight individuals, including children and adolescents. Although Type 1 diabetes, which often presents with weight loss, is more common at this age, Type 2 diabetes is becoming more common.
