Question from Austin, Texas, USA:

My daughter is 21 months old and has Type 1 diabetes. She is on Humalog and NPH. She is gaining weight rapidly. She weights 32 pounds. Is this because of the insulin, and will she stop gaining so much at a certain age?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

She’s gaining weight because of the combination of insulin and food. Have you discussed her weight with your diabetes team and especially the dietitian? The only other thing that may be worth considering is an underactive thyroid gland.
