Question from Rockford, Illinois, USA:

My daughter is 7 years old and was diagnosed about 2 months ago with Type 1 diabetes. Since the diagnosis, she has had a reoccurring urinary tract infection (3 times) along with an enuresis problem. This was never a problem before the diagnosis. She has had relatively good blood sugar numbers and a HbA1c of 7.2. Our endocrinologist prescribed Bactrim for the first bouts and now Amoxicillin for the most recent infection. Is this very common for children with diabetes and are all of these conditions possibly related?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Urine infections are not more common in young children with diabetes of short duration than in non-diabetic children. The enuresis could be from the urine infection or from either high or low blood sugars.

You wrote to us previously mentioning your child has had 2 seizures. Enuresis can also occur during seizures (either from low blood sugars or seizures unrelated to blood sugars).
