Diagnosis and Symptoms, Hypoglycemia
Question from Columbia, South Carolina, USA:
My eight year old daughter lives with her father and stepmother, and they have both expressed she has increased urination and hunger. However, when she is with me, these symptoms do not appear. She had a three-hour oral glucose tolerance test with results as follows:
Time
Value
Normal Range
Fasting
92 mg/dl [5.1 mmol/L]
75-115 mg/dl [4.1-6.4 mmol/L]
30 minutes
153 mg/dl [8.4 mmol/L]
100-190 mg/dl [5.6-10.6 mmol/L]
one hour
136 mg/dl [7.6 mmol/L]
120-180 mg/dl [6.7-10 mmol/L]
two hours
134 mg/dl [7.4 mmol/L]
78-130 mg/dl [4.3-7.2 mmol/L]
three hours
70 mg/dl [3.9 mmol/L]
80-120 mg/dl [4.4-6.7 mmol/L]
Does my daughter have hypoglycemia? Is there a different normal range for pediatric patients?
Answer:
An isolated blood sugar of 70 mg/dl [3.9 mmol/L] would not typically support a diagnosis of hypoglycemia. I encourage you to review your questions about this testing with the physician who ordered the test.
