My father is diabetic. He is 55 and has had diabetes for nearly 20 years. He takes oral medicines to control his blood sugar levels. He recently contracted jaundice (Hep E). This has caused his blood sugar levels to skyrocket. What treatment/regimen should he follow as he cannot use the high carbohydrate diet normally recommended to patients of jaundice?

Most oral medications used to treat diabetes are contraindicated in the presence of liver disease. Insulin is the only appropriate choice here. The use of insulin will allow him to administer insulin with the carbohydrates he eats. He will have to learn carbohydrate counting. This may be worked out with additional education.
