Question from Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia:
My father has type2 diabetes, and his teeth are falling out. Doe this have anything to do with diabetes?
Answer:
From: DTeam Staff
This depends on the state of his oral health. With poor glycemic control and/or periodontal disease this will cause the increased destruction of bone supporting the teeth. A careful oral health assessment and treatment is imperative to further limit systemic complications or dental problems.
It is also important to note that the mouth is responsible for the first part of the digestive process. Problems with oral health will only complicate his ability to attain the goals of medical nutrition therapy.
