Question from West Virginia, USA:

My friend, age 27, has been diagnosed with diabetes. We have been monitoring his sugar level two or three times a day. His levels have ranged from 130-307. He is taking Glucotrol [a pill for Type 2 diabetes]. He has eliminated sugar from his diet and his levels are still high. What type of diet do we need to try? What does he need to eat more of? What should he cut back on? He does exercise. His exercise includes weightlifting, bike riding, and softball. He exercises 5 days a week. Should he change his exercise schedule?

Sounds like you and your friend are taking his diabetes control very seriously, which is great! I can’t answer most of your questions, except to say you really need a diabetes educator. A Certified Diabetes Educator can help you with all these questions. She/he can help your friend determine the best meal plan for his lifestyle, preferences and physical needs. A CDE can also help your friend figure out how to exercise safely; help your friend understand how the medications are working and consider other options for medications if needed. You can find a diabetes educator nurse or dietitian or pharmacist by calling the American Association of Diabetes Educators referral line – (800) TEAM UP 4. They can give you names of diabetes educators in your area by fax or by phone.
