Question from Salt Lake City, Utah, USA:

My friend’s daughter was diagnosed as diabetes Type 2 at age 22, is controlled by diet alone, and is now pregnant at age 24. Does prenatal care differ in this situation versus care for women with Type 1 diabetes who are pregnant or women with gestational diabetes?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

If the glucose is managed only with diet, then the management of the pregnancy is essentially the same as someone who does not have diabetes. However, if a patient comes into the pregnancy with diabetes, then additional fetal and maternal testing is required (detailed ultrasounds on the fetus, frequent blood glucose checks on the mother, etc.).
