Question from Cincinnati, Ohio, USA:

Our four year old grandson was just diagnosed yesterday with type 1 diabetes. He was also hospitalized. Just last week, he was extremely thirsty and had frequent urination. My daughter made an appointment with the doctor and he directed her to Children’s hospital immediately. He has an identical twin brother. Do you think he should also be tested?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Yes, although risks for an identical twin are in the neighborhood of about 5 to 10% for reasons not very well understood. You should have your grandson’s doctors evaluate the situation and make specific recommendations.
