Question from Okeechobee, Florida, USA:

My husband is 22 years old and we just found out yesterday that he has type 1 diabetes. Right now they are giving him pills, they are not sure yet if he will need insulin. We were planning to have a child sometime soon. Will diabetes affect him at all?

Answer:

With good follow-up care, your husband should maintain his ability to father a child. There is some increased risk of having a child with type 1 diabetes. However, this is not as great as it is if the parent has type 2 diabetes. It would be advisable for you and your husband to speak with his physician regarding these issues so that all your questions and concerned can be addressed.
