My mother, who was not known to have diabetes at the time, was in renal failure and severely dehydrated for over five days before her blood sugar was discovered to be very high. Can a period of 5 to 10 days with blood sugars over 550 mg/dl [30.6 mmol/L] cause brain damage?

Generally not. Blood sugars over 1000 mg/dl [55.6 mmol/L] may result in partial or generalized seizures associated with osmotic damage. The findings you relate are common and are generally associated with no immediate problems, especially if good blood sugar control follows.
