Question from Tennessee, USA:

My son has type 1 diabetes and has been controlling his glucose level excellently until this last week. He takes only two injections daily. He has had a head cold this last week and his sugar readings are running quite a bit higher even with more Humalog. Is this normal when a person has a virus or other type of infection?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

It is very common to run higher blood sugars during times of illness. It is very common to have to take extra rapid acting insulin such as Humalog for high blood sugars during those times.
