Question from Pennsylvania, USA:

My son was diagnosed a week ago with type 1 diabetes. His blood sugar level was 758 when we brought him in. I have heard that with a level that high he would have a greater chance of organ failure if or should I say when he gets sick (colds, flu, etc.). Is that true?

I don’t think you need feel any special anxiety on account of an initial blood sugar of 758 mg/dl. Just concentrate on learning to do a really good job of keeping blood glucose levels as near as you can to normal.
