Insulin Pumps

advertisement
Question from Ord, Nebraska, USA:

Our 13 year old son who has had type1 diabetes for approximately two years and recently started using an insulin pump, wrestles, and keeping the infusion set in place while avoiding discomfort during wrestling has proven challenging. We cannot justify changing the set every day due to the associated cost. Do you have any suggestions how we might manage the infusion set during wrestling season?

Answer:

You can contact the pump company and they will send you a kit which has a variety of tapes and adhesives to try. Some other thoughts are to use the Silhouette infusion set since it goes in at an angle and seems to be a bit longer so does not come out so readily. There is no Sof-serter type device for it yet, but it should be available within a month or two, which will make it much easier to put in. If he wears biking shorts or similar tight-fitting shorts under his wrestling jersey, that should also help to keep the set in place.
