Question from California, USA:

Our 15 year old son has type 1 diabetes. He uses marijuana (without our consent} His average blood sugar readings have been running about 325 mg/dl [18.1 mmol/L] for more than six months. He has been seeing a psychologist and other doctors, but little is helping. We have checked in to boarding schools that specialize in “troubled teens”. They all say they will not take him because of the diabetes. Do they have to take him because of the Americans with diabilities Act? Do you have any suggestions of where we can send him or to get help (with substance abuse and blood sugar levels)?

Answer:

Have you spoken with your son’s diabetes doctor? We have residential programs here in the eastern part of the USA, but there must be programs out there.
