Question from Kentucky, USA:

Our 6 year old daughter has Type 1 diabetes. She was diagnosed with it at 2 years of age. She has recently had problems with asthma. What is the relationship between diabetes and asthma?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

There is no definite relationship between diabetes and asthma. However, because asthma is very common and diabetes is the commonest endocrine problem in childhood, it is inevitable that some children will have both. However, the increase in the incidence of asthma and diabetes has led some to speculate that there may be links in cause, e.g., changes in the immune system. We will no doubt hear more over the next few years.
