My 10-year-old grandson just received his insulin pump. He is very active and has accidentally dislodged the sticky patch on the pump from his arm or leg several times. Is there a net sleeve or Velcro band available that could be pulled over the pump, while attached to his arm or leg, but not cut off circulation ?

If the infusion set is being pulled out, a band will not keep it on. There are three options. First, tubing comes in a variety of lengths for the pumps and he may just need a little more room to move. Most come in 23, 31 or 43 inches. Check with the pump manufacturer about choosing a proper length tubing. Secondly, there are several companies that make accessories for pump users, some of which are listed on our Links and Resources page. There are sports packs and arm and leg accessories that will allow the pump to be placed closer to the site while securing it at the same time. Third, if he is sweating them off, he may need to use an adhesive barrier to keep the tape on, such as tincture of benzoin or Mastisol (see our page on Related Products). He may also be using a moisturizing soap such as Dove or any cleansing cream soap and this can cause the tape to come off much more readily as well, so he needs to stop using such soaps.
