Question from York, New York, USA:

Our son was diagnosed last year at age seven with type 1 diabetes. he has had very good HbA1c results of 7.2% and 7.4%. We average one high a day over 200 mg/dl [11.1 mmol/L]. He is having difficulty concentrating at school. He is now in second grade, and his reading is at the beginner level. His teacher and I our considering him for a 504 plan. Could his learning disabilities be connected to diabetes?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

It is unlikely that his learning difficulties are related to diabetes, especially if he is not having frequent low blood sugars.
