Celiac, Other

Question from Louisville, Kentucky, USA:

My daughter is insulin dependent due to a total pancreatectomy at the age of three months. Due to the fact that she does not have the autoimmune disease which causes type 1 diabetes, is she less likely to develop celiac disease?

Answer:

Yes. Celiac disease is associated with specific HLA genes and these are associated with type 1 diabetes, thyroid disease, adrenalitis, etc.
