Question from Fullerton, California, USA:

Three weeks ago, my best friend, who is 25 years old and thin, was diagnosed with diabetes when she went into the ER and had a blood sugar of 804 mg/dl [44.7 mmol/L]. She has been told her pancreas just “quit” working and is now on insulin. Is this classified as type 1 diabetes?

Answer:

Based on the information you’ve provided, your friend clearly has diabetes, and it is most likely to be type1 diabetes. We keep an updated research page on the latest developments in diabetes which should be a good resource for you.
