Insulin resistance usually occurs associated with obesity. The concept related to high levels of insulin required to normalize blood glucose levels. It is very important in anyone who is overweight since the extra fat cells demand more insulin to allow glucose to enter the cells and provide energy.

Type 2 diabetes usually involves a major component of insulin resistance and clinical diabetes occurs when the pancreatic beta cells can no longer supply the extra insulin needed. Several medications decrease insulin resistance and help to lower blood glucose levels when they are successfully utilized.
