Question from Egypt:

What is the most suitable ratio of basal to mealtime insulin for my child? She is 1.3 meters (4 feet, 3 inches) tall and weighs 31.5 kg (91 pounds). Currently, she is on Lantus and Actrapid with an approximate ratio of 1:2.

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Some patients need 50% of their insulin as basal, 50% as Regular (Actrapid), before meals. But, this ratio varies from patient to patient. Some need 60% as basal, for example. The most used Regular to basal insulin ratio may vary between 1.0 to 0.5.
