Diagnosis and Symptoms

Question from Thomasville, North Carolina, USA:

What is the youngest age at which diabetes can be detected?

Answer:

Diabetes can be detected in the newborn period. At present, permanent and transient forms are recognised, but as the developmental biology of the islet cells becomes better understood, this simple division is sure to become expanded and more specific. These forms of diabetes are not related to the type 1A (autoimmune) form which is the most common one in childhood in North America.
