Question from Saskatchewan Canada:

When do you have to check for ketones? I have my first cold since being diagnosed. My blood sugars are all normal and I don’t have any of the other symptoms of having ketones, such as nausea. Do I still have to test for them?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

We generally tell our patients to check ketones if their blood sugars rise during an illness. Since your blood sugars have been good, it sounds like you’re okay. The threshold for testing would be greater than 250mg/dl [13.9 mmol/L].
