Question from Chennai, India:

My two and a half-year-old son was diagnosed with type 1 when he was nine months old. We have tried to keep him in reasonable control. But, most of the times, when we check his urine using urine sticks, it shows a 3+ or 4+. This happens even if his blood sugar is in control, say 100 mg/dl [5.6 mmol/L] to 200 mg/dl [11.1 mmol/L]. Should we be worried about this or is it okay to have sugar in one’s urine?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Children will have sugar in their urine when their blood sugars are over about 180 mg/dl [10.0 mmol/L]. It is a reasonable goal to try and keep the blood sugars below 180 mg/dl [10.0 mmol/L] in most children which will help to decrease or eliminate any sugar you are seeing in the urine.
