Exercise and Sports

Question from Iowa, USA:

Why shouldn’t you exercise if your blood sugar level is higher than 240 mg/dl [13.3 mmol/L]? I thought exercise helped bring blood sugars back down.

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

You are right and wrong. Exercise does bring blood glucose down, but only up to a certain point. When your blood sugar is really high, you are switched over to ketone metabolism, and the stress of exercise will make the blood glucose go up and not down. You should correct the metabolism with insulin and when the glucose is at a more acceptable level, then exercise.
