Question from Woodbury, Connecticut, USA:

Why would my endocrinologist say that my 2 hour readings after a meal must be 105 or below when everything else I read says they should be 120 or below? I am 36 years old and 11 weeks pregnant with my second child. I was 75 pounds overweight when I conceived and have lost 3 pounds so far by following the prescribed diet. For 4 weeks now I have been taking 15 units of Humulin insulin before bedtime because my fasting readings were 100-114. With the insulin, my fasting levels are 95-105. My two hour after meal readings have been 88-115 and yet my doctor wants to put me on insulin after meals too. I am getting a second opinion next week. What is your opinion?

I recommend a one hour post meal glucose less than 130 mg/dl or two hours less than 120 mg/dl with a fasting less than 105 mg/dl. Therefore I think your control at this time is good. If you are on a proper diet you should continue to gain weight but should be able to maintain normal glucose values. Since you have lost some weight, I would recommend a follow-up visit with the dietitian.
