I will be spending quite a lot of time in Johannesburg, South Africa, which has an altitude of about 6000 feet, and I’m told altitude can affect sugar levels quite significantly. Can you advise me on that, and any action I should take?

I have read recently that the American College of Obstetricians says that a pregnant woman may fly up to her 36th week of gestation, but a pregnant woman with diabetes should not fly. Can you explain why? This makes no sense to me, especially if she is in good control.

My 12 year old son, who takes NPH and Regular at 7:00 am, Humalog at dinner, and NPH at bedtime, is traveling with us to Spain on a flight that leaves at 6:00 pm and arrives at 8:00 am local time the following morning. Our doctor has directed me to figure out the best way to handle the change in insulin dosage.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about six years ago. Typically, I experience hypoglycemic reactions about once or twice per month, and in most cases I have a reasonable explanation. However, during two exciting weeks in Barbados, I had one or two hypoglycemic reactions every day (mostly in the afternoon), and I couldn’t find any explanation.

As a inconvenience of my career as a road musician, I am forced to keep track of the prescription laws of the many states I travel in. I am currently in New Mexico and was refused not only syringes but insulin at a national drug store chain, and was told that their policy nationwide was to refuse insulin without a prescription. I do not use Humalog, so I was really upset. Is this legal?
