Amaya

From her mom, Jennifer:

Amaya was diagnosed at the age of six on World Diabetes Day (November 14th) in 2014. She had just undergone a tonsillectomy when we noticed severe complications. While medical staff initially thought it was due to the surgery, her blood sugar was in fact dangerously high, and she was admitted into the PICU in diabetic ketoacidosis. After a few days, she started responding well to insulin therapy and our family changed forever. Amaya has always taken a leadership role in her care. She freely speaks about her diagnosis to others and has been a role model to younger type one diabetic children in our community. This year, in addition to celebrating 10 years as a thriver, she also plans to obtain her driver’s license.
