When I was 14 years old, I started having the symptoms of type 1 diabetes. My dad being a doctor and mom a nurse noticed these symptoms and had the foresight to test my blood sugar with a glucometer. On March 10, 1999 I had my first of thousands of finger sticks and learned my blood glucose was over 200. As a 14 year old, I didn’t know what diabetes was, and asked my father if my life would be ending soon. He assured me that I could live a very normal life with proper medication and lifestyle. 25 years later I can safely say I’m not just surviving but thriving living a healthy life with type 1 diabetes.
When I was first diagnosed, I learned about injecting insulin, foods that could lead to elevated blood glucose, and the importance of exercise in managing this condition. As a teenager, I initially didn’t want to change, but after coming home from school with a blood sugar of over 400 after a pizza party I quickly realized that I would feel my best when my blood glucose was in range. I started to embrace the changes and began to learn how to manage both high and low blood sugars.
My management has been greatly improved with the advances in technology. I first used an insulin pump in 2003 and got my first continuous glucose monitor in 2013, both of which have been life changing for me. I also must say that type 1 diabetes has been a major contributor to my attitude towards diet and exercise. I exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet which has been tremendous in keeping my blood sugars in range. My blood glucose isn’t always perfect, but I’m striving for progress over perfection. I intend to make it another successful 25 years and more!
