It’s truly a blessing to be able to say I’ve been on this journey for twenty-five years and I’m still alive and thriving. I was diagnosed on New Year’s Eve and it wasn’t expected at all. I woke up to the ball dropping and cheers on tv while two nurses stood at the end of my bedside with needles in their hands to give me some shots. Even though I could not imagine the hard road ahead of me, I am glad to say I am who I am today because of this journey. I am fearless, brave, willing to try new things, open to new ways of thinking and living, while being sensitive to others with diabetes and other autoimmune diseases and their life experiences. With today’s technology and advancements in medicine, I encourage those newly diagnosed to not loose hope or walk in fear but to keep pushing forward. Who knows what the the next twenty-five years will bring in finding ways to overcome diabetes.
