Karen Kieffer

I was diagnosed four days after my 7th birthday. In 1955 there was very little known about the condition. My parents were told I would need an injection of insulin every day, and put on a diet. No one knew about counting carbs back then. I was hospitalized three times in the first month before my parents figured out what needed to be done. The doctors didn’t know what was needed.

69 years later, having a Diabetic Alert Dog as a constant companion, and now using a Dexcom and a MiniMed insulin pump, I am still basically healthy. Married with two children and four grandsons, and I plan to continue taking care of myself to hopefully be around to celebrate(?) 75 years.
