Though I never would have chosen this path of literal and figurative highs and lows, physical and emotional pain, frustration and fears, diabetes introduced me to a magical, supportive, empowering community. Growing up with T1D, diabetes walks, events, and diabetes camps were a place where I didn’t feel different because of T1D, but rather, celebrated for the efforts I put into caring for it while learning how to live a full and vibrant life.
Diabetes camp especially provided a unique environment for growth. It’s where I learned that diabetes doesn’t limit me; instead, it taught me resilience, empathy, and strength.
Now, as a 37-year-old working in healthcare, trekking Machu Picchu, and traveling the world, I carry the lessons and support from the T1D community with me. The friendships forged at camp are lifelong bonds, and the confidence gained there guides you through the hardest moments.
Diabetes camp isn’t just a place; it’s a mindset—a reminder that we’re capable of anything with the right support and outlook. It’s where I discovered my strength, found my tribe, met diabetes mentors, and learned that living with T1D could be a life of adventure and joy.
I’m so grateful to my parents for creating space and opportunities for us to participate in the T1D community and camp. I am also so grateful for their patience, guidance, love, and hope.
I love who I am, and know that T1D has, and continues to, influence many chapters of my story. So thanks to you too, diabetes.
