I am 63 years old and was diagnosed at 13 years just entering high school. I was started on Pork Insulin Lente and Pork Regular insulin injections. My journey was not supported by my parents and I managed on my own all through high school and college. Urine testing was the only indicator if blood sugars were uncontrolled. Back then we were able to buy insulin without a prescription as well as supplies, so I was able to manage. Not until I graduated from college and had a job with insurance did my journey improve. I was started on newer insulins and eventually started pump therapy in 2008. What a world of difference the technology has made with CGM and closed loop therapies. I am grateful for the research and improvements in type 1 diabetes care.
