I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 25 back in 2015. It was an unexpected and shocking. I had no idea what diabetes was and what that diagnosis meant for my life. I was given insulin, was told good luck and sent on my way. The next 8 years of my diabetes was uncontrolled to say the least. I didn’t know how insulin worked, and was told I wasn’t able to eat certain foods ever again, which sent me to eat as much of that food as I could. I was unable to gain weight, and most days my blood sugars were high, followed by lows at night. In 2023 I had a scary hyperglycemia which gave me the motivation to find a new care team and take my health back. I found an amazing endocrinologist who suggested I try insulin pump therapy and I jumped at the chance. I now live a healthier life, have an A1C of 5.7 and take my diabetes seriously. I take pride in knowing that although I have this disease, I can embrace it and live a healthy long life if I just put in the work. I try to help as many newly diagnosed people as I can because I feel like there were many tools that I wasn’t given when I was diagnosed. I wasn’t given a lot of the tools and support we need as newly diagnosed in order to succeed.
