I was diagnosed just after finishing my doctoral program. There were several months of joint pain and frequent urination before my small town doctor in the small college town where I had just gotten my first post-PhD job was able to figure out what was wrong with me. At first, he said it was stress — or hormones — six months after being diagnosed I found out I was pregnant so learning how to be a type 1 diabetic was soon followed by learning how to be a pregnant diabetic. My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was five, so she and I are now a type 1 diabetic family (I’m a single parent). it’s been a tough ten years but I’m really proud of myself for taking care of me and taking care of Olivia – it’s definitely been a struggle and a learning experience.
The photo is from last summer. I went through five months of chemotherapy last year for breast cancer and lost of all of my hair – this was my favorite wig!
